Durant cinq ans, le peintre orientaliste français Constant-Georges Gasté (1869-1910) vécut en Inde, après avoir passé plusieurs années en Algérie et en Egypte ; cinq ans qui comptent parmi les plus productives de sa vie, à peindre et à photographier la vie quotidienne des populations locales.Invitation au voyage, poétiqueet mystérieuse, son œuvre raconte la réalité de l’Inde à la charnière des années 1900 : un Orient bien loin des mirages…
After spending several years in Algeria and in Egypt, Constant-Georges Gasté (1869 – 1910), a French Orientalist painter, moves to India for 5 years. It is 5 of the most productive years of his life, painting and taking pictures of the daily life of the local population. Poetic, mysterious and a travel invitation, his work tells about the real India in the early 1900’s, an East so far from mirages…
