Danesh Bharucha, an Indo-French painter, was born in Pune, India, and moved to France at the age of 21. He spent his first year there as a guest of Sir Dinshaw Petit, at one of the landmark mansions of the French Riviera known as “Villa Savaric,” near Eze Village, in the mountains between Nice and Monte Carlo. It was at Savaric that he met the Belgian painter Laurent Moonens, at that time one of the French Riviera’s most popular artists.

Moonens soon became both mentor and friend to the young Bharucha. Two or three afternoons a week would be spent driving up into the mountains around Nice and Monaco, to enjoy and paint the incomparable landscapes and ancient villages of the Mediterranean coast. It was under Moonens’ tutelage that Danesh Bharucha learnt the challenges and subtleties of watercolour painting.

Bharucha moved to Paris the following year, where he worked for 31 years at the U.S.Embassy. His job entailed extensive travel to countries in Europe, Africa and the Far East, and several of the paintings at this show were done in his spare time during those trips. He also took a year’s course in figure drawing at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he discovered the pleasures of pen and ink drawing. Several panels of his ink sketches are on display at this show.
