    Why learn French ?

    1. French is an official working language in dozens of international organizations, including the United Nations, International Olympic Committee, and International Red Cross.

    2. More than 170 million people around the world understand, speak, read or write French

    3. French as a foreign language is the second most frequently taught language in the world after English. It is also the second most frequently used language on the internet. French is ranked the 2nd most influential language in the world.

    4. French is the lingua franca of culture, including art, cuisine, dance, and fashion. France has won more Nobel Prizes for literature than any other country in the world and is one of the top producers of international films.

    5. French is the language of culture, opening your door to a whole new civilisation – the Francophone world. You will appreciate its art, music, literature, cinema, television, radio, dance, cuisine and fashion in the original language (without losing its uniqueness in translation!)

    6. Travelling to Francophone countries becomes easier and more enjoyable as you will be able to communicate with the local people and you will be appreciated by them for knowing their language.

    7. Knowing French will allow you not only to function but to compete effectively in the global economy of the future. It will also increase your job opportunities and salary potential. For those with appropriate skills and good proficiency in French they can work in diverse fields: hospitality and tourism industry, multinational companies, interpretation and translation, diplomatic services, teaching, research…

    8. Learning French will improve your vocabulary in English; this is because 40 to 50% of English vocabulary comes from French. Learning French will also enhance your grammar skills, and will greatly improve your scores on the verbal section. It also develops your critical and creative thinking skills, because progress is very easy to measure, you can quickly take pride in your new abilities.

    9. France is world’s most visited country in the world. More tourists visit France than any other country in the world.

    10. France has won more Nobel Prizes for literature than any other country in the world.

Welcome to the Alliance Française Chandigarh

The name of Alliance teaches us to respect the Other one, his personality, its values. If an alliance is a friendship, a union of interest and support, a commitment between bodies, cities or states, then, France is in Chandigarh to attain together a common cause. It is this junction which makes the wealth and the beauty of our mission in a French Alliance abroad. We are not a private Institute of language, even less a hegemonic cultural Institute. We are engaged in a joint venture: the sharing of our languages, our cultures, the distribution of our fruits, our values.
